Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate and hungry for education. As a science teacher, I am excited and overjoyed to see that my students are so interested in understanding how science shapes the world around them. However, I service extremely under privileged students in an impoverished, urban community where resources are scarce. I service students from ages eleven to fourteen who range in gender, ethnicity, interest and learning abilities. In this extremely diverse community, I am responsible for educating all students no matter their academic level, need, ability and interest. Daily, I teach approximately ninety students in my classroom, thirty students each class session.

Project Based Learning encourages students to build on prior knowledge and experiences.

Students in my classroom come to school saying they have difficulty completing practice assignments at home because of lack of supplies, resources, privacy and space. I'd like to create an environment where supplies are plenty and ready at students' fingertips.

My Project

Keeping up with the news around us can be a drag. However my students must keep up with current events in the world of science to better prepare them for they future.

To spark students' interest in reading, I will be creating small group activities that encourage hands-on reading and application, through fun and engaging text.

Education is ever changing and so are the interest of my students. With these changes in our students, we must also change the way we address teaching and learning.

Students in my classroom are struggling readers, and nonfiction text can be boring for students. I would like to introduce Scholastic Science World magazines to my classroom because it offers short, interesting, and engaging texts that applies to everyday life.

Struggling and reluctant readers will often pick up a magazine because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book and the reading is minimal. Students who read magazines find reading fun and begin to read more for enjoyment because they have a choice in what they are reading! Helping students begin to learn that reading is fun is perfect way to build better Readers and Scientists.
