Science Mentor Texts to Promote STEM in the Classroom

My students need rich mentor texts in science concepts to teach science in class and materials to enhance STEM in the classroom. The students need science books to learn science concepts because we have no textbooks.

My Students

We are in a small rural community where many people are below or at the poverty line. Many of the students come from homes where English is a second language or no English is spoken. The students have an appreciation for learning and want access to the proper education they deserve through supportive and engaging materials in the classroom. Many of the students struggle to have the basic needs in the home setting so we work hard to make sure they have what they need in the classroom to promote their education and future. These students have a desire to learn and want the best education they can have.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to have access to rich content on science standards that we cover in our curriculum and will also provide me students with information and materials to integrate STEM more in the classroom. These materials will provide nonfiction texts for science while taking the role of science textbooks. These books will be used in the place of textbooks that we do not have but also provide kid friendly content of the curriculum.

Students will be able to use these materials to enhance their education but also promoting science in the classroom.

Students will be able to build structures using legos and different building blocks using Stem challenges of build towers. Students will also be able to build structures and demonstrate how these structures can support other objects or problem solve how to make the structure better. I will also have the resources and ideas to incorporate Stem in the classroom through different student hands on projects and experiments that promote learning in the classroom. The science content books will provide information about each science standard that we are expected to cover and teach our students. This will also students access to the information but also allow them to be able to go back and reread the information when completing projects and experiments. Students will be able to use these materials to complete stem projects including using legos to build, plan, and problem solve. Science is sadly being pushed out in daily class schedules and it is important that we make sure our students have a strong education that includes science as the world continues to grow in technology and a global outlook. Many of our students love science and I want to give them the materials and opportunities to become the scientist in the classroom.
