My Students

We just received our science module kits and guess what? No microscopes! How will we ever be able to see what we're doing? To answer that question, learning will definitely have to occur under a microscope and my amazing students will need 5 of them to conduct observations and experiments!

My students attend school in an urban district located in South Central Los Angeles.

My 6th grade students come to school everyday waiting to learn new and exciting information. They are kind, hardworking, and persevere through the situations they live through on a daily basis. Unfortunately, poverty in our area is a constant issue that we face. Currently, more than 80 percent of the students attending our school qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch. However, the students are still eager to learn new things, intrigued by technology including the information they can obtain from it, and most importantly, its varied uses. They come to school every day looking forward to new and exciting learning activities. With microscopic technology, my students will continue to be engaged in learning and see science and the world in a different light!

My Project

During science, students will be exposed to a variety of microscopic living things. We will need 5 microscopes to ensure that all students and groups can actively participate in during the observation, discovery and experimentation phases of the activities. Students will learn various protocols and purposes for using microscopes, engage in actives specifically designed for microscope use, as well as how to take care of them. Focus will be on the Next Generation Science Standard and Science and Engineering Practice areas: Molecules to Organisms-Structures and Processes; Ecosystems-Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics; Heredity-Inheritance and Variation Traits; and Biological Evolution-Unity and Diversity. They will learn there is more to how we interact with their world than what they think. Students will create lab reports during the observation, discovery and experimentation phases as well as document the process creating their own presentation using the iPad app, iMovie.

The donation of microscopes will give them greater access to developing science literacy.

Students will be able to see a part of their world they would not otherwise know using only the naked eye. I believe this would also intrigue students, spike their interests, and motivate them to see science as fun and a subject area they would like to know about. Lastly, students will develop and enhance the 21st Century Learning skills of collaboration and communication in a fun and interactive way.
