Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

PS 157 is located in the South Bronx. The general population of students come from low socio-economic families and are unable to supply their children with the necessities for school. Our school is privileged to have extraordinary programs such as dance, viola and science lab. I currently teach science for grades 3,4, & 5 and my room desperately needs more supplies for the upcoming school year. As part of the Balanced Literacy program implemented in the school, students are encouraged to sit on a rug and listen to the mini-lesson while the teacher models. However, I have this dingy, handed-down carpet that is located in the center of the room. I would love a bright, science related rug that will entice the children to gather and want to learn while at the rug. I am really asking for the "Oh that is so cool!" rug. I am trying to create a lab at the elementary level. I have decorated the room with various themes of science, but the out of pocket expense is so high. I don't want my room to be an extension of their classroom - I want a room that is so stimulating that is makes the children eager to learn. The carpet aside from mini-lessons will also aid in behavior management. I can tell a child who is reluctant to work and cooperate to simply "Go sit on Jupiter" for their time out. A new rug for my room will help create an atmosphere is that is heavily concentrated in science. I believe a planetary rug will encourage children to learn and work cooperatively. It will add decor and provide an amazing visual regarding the solar system, especially for the younger and more visual / kinesthetic learner. Visitors to my room will be wowed with the rug as well as it will help teach these kids responsibility while cleaning it or working on it.
