Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My fifth grade class loves science! Although over 80% of African American students at the school did not pass the science test last year, they are passionate about learning science. They learn best with hands on experiments and are making great gains this year. We just finished a unit on microscopes and had an exhibit (both run and designed by the students) where over 200 visitors came to learn about microscopes, cells, and the properties of magnification.

What we need are more science kits, so students can do hands more on experiments, play games, read non-fiction books and immerse themselves in the world of science. I want my students to understand the scientific method, not through reading a textbook, but through applying the method in real experiments. To do that, I need more supplies! I see many future scientists in my classroom, but they need to have access to materials and experiments now, to build those skills and ideas!

By having tubs in the classroom, with different experiments, we can do more hands-on-science. Also, I plan on having more science exhibit days in my classroom using these materials. The last exhibit day was attended by seven parents. It was the first time six of those parents had come to school during the school day! On top of that, these days create a buzz in our school, and get students inspired by science.
