Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

More science in the classroom is what our future scientists of America need. The first graders that I teach are in need of science kits to explore the world, do research and collect data. I teach at a K-8 charter school and there are approximately 290 students enrolled at the school. There will be 20 students in my classroom this year. Ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

We are lucky that our school does not have to cutback on faculty and staff, but we do have to cutback on books, supplies and other resources. We will have limited resources for hands on materials that accompany the N.C. science curriculum. I find that the first graders learn best when using hands on materials and conducting experiments in science and other areas.

The resources that I'm requesting are science kits that integrate several disciplines, such as history, literature and the arts. These are three areas that are often overlooked. The first graders will be able to watch plants and animals grow. They will be able to do experiments with color, light and magnets.

With your help and the strong academic focus we have at our school our students will not have to go without while our economy gets back on its feet. Thank you in advance for helping these first graders on their quest to become our future scientists of America.
