My Students

Rosalind Franklin once said, "Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated." Access to science education and science fields is access to the study of everyday life. Due to systemic inequities, my students from primarily low-income Latinx backgrounds do not often see themselves represented in STEM fields. Many of them recently arrived in the US from Central America and are learning science as well as English simultaneously. This does not quell their passion for learning and for the study of science.

My students take the growth mindset to heart.

They know that even if they don't understand something or don't see themselves represented in scientific fields, they are just not there YET. They work constantly to grow their intelligence and improve their scientific understanding. They believe that positive reinforcement is stronger than negative punishment, and they know that even if they are not good at science yet, they can get there through perseverance and connections to the real-world.

My Project

Our school is in inner-city Los Angeles and we have limited funding for new and clean materials for science labs. Some of these materials will be used to replace old and broken materials we currently have. ALL students deserve to learn with the highest quality of materials no matter their zip code. The other materials will promote students making connections to real-world applications.

Science is always more engaging when it can be connected to the world.

These materials will fund a variety of labs whose goal is just that: Ecocolumns and Soil Sample Testing in AP Environmental Science, Ocean Water Testing in Marine Biology, and various lessons in 9th-grade Biology.
