Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Biology and Living Environment to a wonderful and creative group of boys and girls at a high school in New York. They are excited to learn and come to school each day. It is important to ensure that children enjoy learning. This is what school should be about. The school is located near NYCHA low-income housing and takes up the majority of the student body. Students are considered low-income and need a lot of resources in order to make this school year complete! Teaching science to 9th and 10th graders will require me to utilize a variety of methods to keep students engaged and interested in learning, especially returning back from the pandemic.

Therefore, they need all the necessary materials that will make them successful, independent and confident learners.

My Project

My high school students are coming into high school for the first time in September. It is the start of their educational careers that will be counted towards what they want to do in the future. Being that, students were virtual for the past two years, I want them to come into school and see a beautiful classroom tailored for science. I want them to see beautiful bulletin boards. Fadeless paper and border will help make colorful boards. The boards will be used to hang their work so that they can be proud of all the things that they are learning to do throughout the school year. This will help create pride in the work that they need to create for the rest of their educational careers. Science posters and inspirational posters will allow them to continue to strive hard every day in class. I want them to be able to see how cool science can be when you put your mind to it. Science gadgets will be in the class for students to explore. The gift card will also be used to purchase materials for decorating the classroom. Teachers Pay Teachers has a great selection of “sciencey” decorations for bulletin boards and posters for students.

Being a brand new teacher, I don't have any supplies for my classroom.

The classroom is bare with nothing colorful added to it. Due to the pandemic, there were budget cuts and we are not able to get funded for materials for the classroom. Students are used to seeing colorful and bright classrooms since their younger ages. As they get older, teachers tend to lose that light and classrooms become duller. I want to break that cycle. I want students to be able to love and want to be in the classroom they're in.
