Science is Cool But We Need Materials for Science at School!
My students need a GeoSafari talking microscope, 3-D science viewers, real bugs discovery kit and other science materials to help them investigate science concepts.

Young children learn through play and in my classroom, center time is when we "play" and learn the most. This is the time for them to become authors, community helpers, builders, artist and SCIENTIST! It is a time for fun, freedom, exploration and investigation.
Until this year, all of the children going to kindergarten in Auburn, AL attended one school.
It was a very special place designed just for kindergarten. At our previous school, we had a science lab and resources that were specifically suited for our young learners. However, with our growing community, we outgrew our school and had to move kindergarten back into the elementary schools. It has been 20 years since kindergarten was in an elementary school. The science lab and many of the early childhood resources that we enjoyed at our old school are not available to us here. While the setting is not the same, we still strive to provide our children with rich, meaningful experiences to help them learn, grow and develop.
My students are very diverse, curious and active five and six year olds. Several of them are English language learners and all of them are eager to explore and learn about the world around them!
My Project
At this time, our science center is a bit shabby. It is one of the more popular centers in our classroom, but it is in need of new and fresh resources. While students still choose to visit this center, I have noticed that they have lost the spark that they once had. They are doing the same activities over and over with little excitement. New equipment will revitalize this center and give my children more opportunities to engage in independent exploration, cooperative activities and authentic learning. With the magnifying glasses the children can take a "closer look" at bugs, plants and the things around them. They will be able to catch critters on the playground and use the 3-D viewers to observe them. They will use the mirrors to explore properties of light and reflection and the waterway pipe builders to explore properties of motion. We will observe the life cycle of ladybugs and how plants grow. In fact, each piece of equipment will provide endless learning opportunities!
Our science center is a springboard for so many learning opportunities.
It provides a place for the students to ask questions, make predictions and explore the possibilities. In addition, it lends to real reading, writing and math experiences. With your help, the science center will keep my students engaged, excited and learning!
