Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am a First Grade teacher in a Spanish Bilingual Program at an inner city school in SF. Our school is 80% English Language Learners and most of those students also qualify for our free lunch program due to their low SES.
One of the biggest obstacles in our student's success is their lack of scientific concept knowledge and scientific vocabulary in both Spanish and English.
Our students are currently tested in science in fourth grade. Students at our school do no do well in either language arts or science assessments and so we are a Reading First School.
Since we are a Reading First School we are under various restrictions regarding the amount of time spent teaching reading and writing. However we do not have a science curriculum, science books, or materials for exploration. Our district purchases materials mostly for Third grade up because of the assessment in Fourth grade. First grade teachers thus end up teaching little if any science.
I am currently in the process of rearranging our yearlong plan together with the other First Grade teacher in order to coordinate as many subjects as we can with our first science theme: Senses. After we explore the senses we will continue with animals characteristics, habitats, and classifications. The rearrangement of our classrooms schedules and the correlation of subject matter will allow us to use our time more efficiently so that we can incorporate science.
In order to address the need for scientific concept knowledge I need to have materials to facilitate exploration.
I am requesting the following materials
1. microscopes
2. animal and insect specimens
3. slides
4. microscopes for exploring our surroundings
5. animal counters for classification
I will provide activities for the students to explore, sort, and describe during our math and science centers.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. You will help them to acquire the basic skills that will lead them to further scientific development. You will also help give students the knowledge that they need to succeed in understanding what they read and in using specific vocabulary to describe writing.
Thank you.
