My Students

I teach kindergarten in a Title I, northern California elementary school where about fifty percent of our student population qualifies to receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. Last year, we started school in a distant learning classroom online! This fall, the plan and the hope is for in-person learning from the first day throughout the year!

Some of my students are second language learners, some have attended preschool or TK for part of the year, and for some, this is their first experience in an academic setting.

Their home life, experiences and thus, background knowledge is a huge factor in their readiness to learn foundational skills.

My kindergartners are an inquisitive group of young people who are learning how to make new friends and listen to others and their feelings. We want them to have a growth mindset as they begin to read, explore numbers, and problem-solve in both math and science in small, collaborative, differentiated groupings with an emphasis on personalized learning as part of our daily workshops.

My Project

Science in Kindergarten is all about exploration and discovery. Coming up this Spring, we will explore and learn about bugs such as butterflies and ladybugs. In our garden, we will plant vegetables and observe their life cycle from seed to vegetable. We will also compare butterfly larvae and it's transformation with the moth larvae. Students will journal their transformation into butterflies and moths.

The test tubes will be used to make oceans in a bottle as we learn about saltwater, waves, and ocean animals and their habitats.

This is a favorite unit in Kindergarten and at the end of the unit, each child presents their research including their own writing and poster on one ocean animal.
