My Students

How can we understand the ocean? My students live in a small Alaskan fishing village. The ocean is literally our backyard. This resource is a tremendous inspiration for the study of science.

My students live in a small Alaskan fishing village.

They are in an alternative program designed for students who have failed and/or dropped out of school. The alternative program includes teen parents and students who have been incarcerated. We hope to offer them a second chance to return to school and complete their high school education.

My Project

These DVDs offer a variety of insights to the ocean. Four of the DVDs give a general overview about oceanography. Two of the DVDs describe the impact of the oceans on global and local weather patterns. One of the DVDs describes the water cycle, and the final DVD describes the Galapagos Islands.

Students who have failed often claim that school is boring.

These resources will give an exciting focus to the science of oceans. Since the ocean is a phenomenon of their environment that is familiar, it is hoped that this familiarity will spark a renewed enthusiasm in school that will propel them to complete their high school education.
