Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a large urban public school in Bronx, N.Y. The majority of our students are immigrants from very diverse backgrounds, including the Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, West African and Latin America. More than half of our student population is learning English as a new language.

While culturally our students are diverse, economically 94% of our students come from low-income households and qualify to receive reduced price or free breakfast and lunch.

Recently the city’s initiative, “Breakfast in the Classroom” has been a very successful program in our school, which ensured that our students received the nutrients and energy needed to begin their academic day.

Despite the day-to-day obstacles, our students work very hard to get into well-reputed high schools within the City. In the recent years, a few of our alumni got acceptance to the city’s prestigious specialized high schools. Our students need your support to fund resources to further their education.

My Project

My project will provide the supplies and opportunities needed for the students in my class and show them that science and math is everywhere around them. My students need a laptop computer to assist them with this "Science Environmental" project. I want my students to be able to experience and see that science is everywhere. I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. I teach a wonderful group of student!

Unfortunately, our school is located in a low-income area with 100 percent of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

Many of the students come from single-parent household or families with only one parent working.

Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are damaging the environment. This is a very interesting topic to the students because they are currently working on the early inventions of the industrial revolution.I would like to have my students research about innovations in alternative energy sources. Then in groups, they will design and build a model of a system to generate energy. Once projects are complete, they will present their design to the class. The focus here would be for my students to learn the importance of renewable energy resources and what they and their family can do to conserve energy at home. In order to complete this project, my students need a computer to research different energy sources and work on designing their own projects.
