My Students

Imagine being ten years old, living and going to school in the inner city of Los Angeles. Now imagine that you are given the opportunity to venture out beyond your familiar neighborhood and four-walled classroom, to enter a brand new world of learning through exploration and adventure!

Our students are eager learners.

They derive a tremendous sense of pride and excitement over discovering things for themselves. They also understand the importance and value of collaborating with each other. Be it by connecting with a fictional character, explaining their rationale for solving a math problem, or hypothesizing about the results of their science experiments, they enjoy being challenged to think creatively. They are excited about and committed to making AstroCamp a real experience in their lives and so have created and volunteered at various fundraising events, including Family Movie Night and a school-wide Dance Party. They are consistently working hard on our recycling campaign, often digging their little hands into bins around the school during their recess time. They are willing to work together and give of themselves in ways they have never done before because this is a cause worth contributing to.

My Project

Our students will have the opportunity to experience science, nature, and teamwork in a completely unique way. The science classes are directly aligned with the 5th grade content standards and are taught in a way that is not possible in a regular classroom setting. They will engage in hands-on projects related to astronomy, electricity, magnetism, and gravity, among other scientific concepts. AstroCamp is focused on guiding students in their learning through dynamic and fully engaging activities. Another important aspect of the program is that it builds a strong sense of team. Students participate in a number of physical and psychological challenges in which they have to work as a team to solve problems. For many students this will be the first time that they are away from home, but will be completely supported in learning and exploring by their teachers and peers. It really will be an opportunity for them to learn and grow in ways that are totally new.

When we shared the possibility of going to AstroCamp with our students, we immediately recognized the profound impact it was going to make on their lives.

First there was a brief moment of disbelief, followed by nervousness, then by pure excitement. AstroCamp will allow our students to explore new academic content and challenge them to think in creative ways. It will, without a doubt, broaden their perspectives of what they are capable of.
