My Students

My students range from 13 to 20 years of age. They are boys and girls who speak a variety of first languages. They attend an urban high school within the poorest region of the city. 21.7% are English learners. 99% are economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced price lunch.

Education is a means for changing these students' lives.

They learn better using visuals. Students whose first language is English have mixed abilities. Due to budget cuts, the school does not supply materials like colored paper and electric sharpeners. Some students cannot afford a constant supply of required supplies. In addition, a number of students do not live in one place because the parents are either separated or the students live in a foster home. This affects their stability and consistent structure and therefore often come to school unprepared.

My Project

I am asking for basic supplies including three boxes of red Roller Ball Pens, six reams of assorted colors of Astrobrights Premium Colored Paper, five boxes of black and blue Pens, two Electric Pencil Sharpeners. With these, my students' instruction will not be impeded by lack of supplies. I have plenty of pencils in my room. Should a student come to school unprepared, I can lend them a pencil to use.

These supplies would be a game changer in our classroom and they would ensure that my students are on task all the time during instruction.

The colored paper will support differentiated instruction. Different types of assignments will be printed on different colors to cater to different students entry levels and different learning styles. The pens will also be supplied to students as need be. As as result of this project, the classroom will be a safe place to be regardless of a student's economic or social situation.
