Science Classroom Needs Living Creatures Other Than The Kids

My students need an aquarium with beautiful fish, an ant farm to watch them work, and a terrarium set and a crab habitat would make our classroom feel like we are at the Aquarium without leaving the building.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the new science teacher at my school, I teach grades Pre-K through grade 2. I work on the Lower East Side in Manhattan, our science room has no real life Materials! Children in this school and community are stressed with all the academics and testing, science should be fun and exciting. With living things all around us we would be able to learn about their habitats and lifestyles and not just have to read about it in a book.

The students in my school speak many different languages and are between the ages of 4 and 8. To be able to look at real life animals in the classroom will help them to communicate and make science easier for them to understand and make it fun.

An aquarium kit would come with the tank, filter, and all essentials to start up an aquarium for the classroom. A terrarium comes with the proper lighting and all the essentials to get a home started. Ants work hard, we have no idea because they are so small and we cant see their homes since it is usually underground. When they are in a clear home we are able to see the way they work all day. The amazing tunnels they create and the way they all work together would lead to a topic of how we need to all work together in our classroom. The children love learning about ants because it is something they can see in their everyday life when they leave school. On weekends when walking down the street with their parents they are able to tell them so much about them using an extensive vocabulary. The parents are so proud of their children and the children are excited to share their information. Wouldn't you want to be in that Science Class?! I want these children to be able to enjoy school and look forward to coming to Science.

The children in the neighborhood do not that the money to purchase anything extra besides the food and clothes on their back. Being in school is a relief from being home. The everyday academics is getting tougher and tougher on these young children. I want to make science fun and exciting for all of them!
