I am a first grade teacher in California. Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.

We are very fortunate at our school to have a small garden that students can visit and care for. I would like to be able to further student learning by adding to the science literature I use in my classroom. The books will be used to introduce and teach concepts of science that students can explore in the real world of the school garden. A book about ladybugs comes alive when students observe ladybugs snacking on aphids; composting becomes a lot less disgusting when one learns how it occurs.

Children learn by doing. Plain and simple. Project-centered learning, where students learn academic material through hands-on learning experiences, is in most experts' opinion the best, most effective, and most meaningful way to educate our young. And it's fun! Some of the books in this selection have received awards; several have received the Giverny Book Award for picture books on science. All are excellent titles that will expand our science curriculum.

The inclusion of these high-quality science literature titles to the science curriculum in my classroom will have a lasting impact on student learning. Kids can learn if provided with the materials! Please help!
