Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Textbooks are BORING! Let's use our hands! I want my students to learn to love science! I want my students to use their hands and get busy investigating the world around them!

My third grade students are inquisitive!

They are 7 and 8 years old. They have not yet had the opportunity to engage in detailed science labs and they never stop asking questions! They are so excited to learn. My students come from all different areas of Kendall, Florida. Most of them are still learning English. Some have Learning Disabilities, Autism, and other health impairments. Our school has five third grade classes and the materials are spread thin. I want to show my students everything, but we don't have the materials.

My Project

The requested materials will bring our textbook readings to life. The students will engage in experiments so they can test their own hypothesis, draw conclusions and collaborate with their peers! They will be able to connect math and science with the thermometers, use flashlights to see how light travels and reflects off of mirrors. They will be able to experiment safely with the goggles and test for density using the cubes. It's much more fun than oil, water, and vinegar. They will use the measuring tapes to see how far their cars and marbles will travel when learning about speed and velocity.

Sometimes we read in our textbooks about things that scientists have not yet found answers to.

When they read this, I tell my students, "Maybe you will grow up to be a scientist and answer the WHY questions." I hope they will! I'm excited to see them explore with their new science lab equipment.
