We are a public school who has written in our goals for the year that we must improve our science instruction. We are a Pre-k - 6 school with a population of 1400 children, most of them who are eligible for free or reduced priced lunch. I am a science cluster teacher who services all grades from K to 6. I also do an Enrichment Program for grades 3, 4, and 5. I would like to offer them tennis as an option this year, as I had offered volleyball last year. Some of the children I service for both science and Enrichment are special needs children who would greatly benefit from the physical activity.
I would love to offer my students the opportunity to learn a new sport - tennis. They will not only be able to have a great time and become more physically fit, but I will also use it to teach some of my science concepts - especially forces and motion - a big part of both grades 3 and 6 curriculum. I would also love to teach it because it would give me the opportunity to use the four units of study I created last year as part of a graduate course in sports science I took last year.
I need 20 tennis rackets, 100 tennis balls, and a tennis portable tennis net in order to get the program started. As I stated earlier, my students will benefit from physical activity. As a part of the science curriculum, they will learn important concepts from hands-on experience. As far as enrichment is concerned, my students will be able to participate in a sport they chose to learn, empowering the students.
Your generous contribution will make it possible for my students to enjoy themselves while learning a new sport and also to learn key science concepts while having a great time.
