My Students

Math supplies? Check! Science supplies? Check! Art supplies? Silence. My students have no art supplies. They've been diligently studying academics and would love nothing more than to enter a poster contest at the state Science and Engineering Fair but they need art supplies to make their posters.

The benefits of art education are no secret.

The most important advantage that the arts provide to my demographic of students is the proven leveling of the "learning field" across socio-economic boundaries. My kids reside in the valley of that field and they have a tremendous climb uphill. Many of my students are homeless and hungry. Others are placed in foster homes or are cared for by relatives while their single parent works. Others raise their younger siblings while their parents addictions go untreated. However, this does not define my students. They are a happy and kind group who manage to climb uphill despite their circumstances. They come to class everyday to learn and better themselves. They even make goals such as "This year I just really, really want to pass the Hawaii State Assessment." And they love art. And they deserve to have the opportunity to showcase their love of art and all that they've learned in math and science at the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair.

My Project

The academic turf war between the arts and sciences is over. It is no secret that they exist together in a relationship of mutual dependency. They share more similarities than differences. The requested resources (paper, mounting boards, art supplies) would allow my students to enter the mathematics themed poster contest at the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair thus allowing them to showcase all they've learned in math, science and art class. This will help them to think about these three subjects in abstract terms as well as in terms of technique. Doing this will demystify the academic subjects with which many students are struggling. Art is intrinsically motivating. If students learn about math and science in the context of something they're good at and interested in (art), then they'll realize that math and science are not so difficult after all.

Historical proof of the importance of fusing math with art can be found in ancient civilizations who used the golden ratio to construct their most famous monuments.

My students may not create the next Parthenon or the next Colosseum, but they need to start thinking like artists inspired by mathematics and mathematicians inspired by artists. Receiving the requested supplies so that they can enter the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair poster contest will accomplish this important objective.
