Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing fourth graders, who deserve the very best! They are fun, energetic and creative, and I love to showcase their spectacular talents. The school where I teach is considered "high poverty," so some students do not have the same opportunities as others. Everyone qualifies for free lunch in the Title I program.

Despite our economic challenges, our community is very supportive and makes our little school a great place to learn!

Although my students are not diverse in race and background, they are all creative by nature and very different in the way they learn. Our urban school is located in a community that supports the arts, STEM, and extracurricular activities. Many students come into school looking forward to simple things like taking a photo, singing a song, or getting a hello from a friend. For some of them, this interaction is the only positive part of their day.

My Project

The STEAM combination of the arts and science is powerful. We ask students to be analytical and apply critical thinking skills but we neglect to allow them to express themselves creatively. I wish to enhance our life science curriculum with the addition of music and watercolor art. Our school garden will be our setting. Planted by kids, it holds a vibrant ecosystem of plant and animal life that is ready to be analyzed, documented, and brought to life with art. I want my students to use the magnifiers to seek out details in species that are co-existing, like bees and flowers, and document in great detail the characteristics and mutual benefits they share in order to survive. With the watercolor paper, easels, paints and brushes, I want to encourage my scientists to capture the co-existence of these species using vibrant color, shadow, and veining techniques. Finally, I wish to use the speaker outdoors to inspire the art process with classical music and sounds that will complete our serene learning experience.

Both science and art are human attempts to understand and describe the world around us.

Please support our project and promote a balance of inquiry and creativity in and out of our classroom. A humble thank you for any help you can provide.
