Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a third grade classroom in a low income neighborhood. Most of our students live in the surrounding projects. I want to make sure they have a clean, safe, and welcoming classroom with new materials to get them excited for the amazing year to come. My third graders are excited to be back in a real classroom. They jump with joy during our reading, math, and writing workshops. The enthusiasm I see in them is something I haven't seen in any other group I have worked with.

My Project

My group is full of enthusiastic learners who are not only eager to learn but to build relationships with one another. This year I bought two "reading pillows" to be used for independent reading. My group has done an incredible job taking turns and sharing. The reading pillows have been incredibly successful in motivating my kids to read. Adding more pillows will help us maintain a powerful reading culture within our classroom.

I also implemented "brain breaks," where students get 20 minutes to just be kids!

It's really helped strengthen the bonds they have with one another. After the tough year many have had I think it's important to provide time for students to socialize and further develop their social emotional skills. The most requested item for brain break time was beads for bracelet making. With a class of 60% girls, you can only imagine how excited they will be to see this in our brain break bin. Thank you for helping me make my class a safe, fun, and nurturing place to be.
