My Students

Everyday I greet students with a hug and a smile at the door. We start off with "circle" time. Students are able to express their feelings in a circle. This technique helps with the social/emotional aspect in their lives. We engage in rich text that helps with reading, writing, and expressing ideas.

They are students who are products of generational poverty, but every day strive to do their best.

They are children who are always wanting more, and never allow their challenges to prevent them from learning, and striving to be all that they can be. My scholars are very outspoken, and enjoy having their voices heard. I call them the "great debaters" because they would rather verbally complete tasks with groups versus independent practices on a worksheet. They all enjoy hands-on learning. They love for their work to be displayed around the school or on bulletin boards. Our school is such a family-oriented environment. Every staff member takes responsibility for each child's well being. It is never "my students" it is always "our students."

My Project

My scholars aren't as fortunate as other students around the world. Many times we take simple things for granted; or complain about having to do laundry on the weekends. These group of children would do anything to have a washer and a dryer at home. They would love helping their mom fold clothes on the weekends.

These precious children have put so much in perspective for me.

I realize now what it is like to come to school in dirty clothes because you only have two uniforms that many times you have to share with your siblings or wash in the bathtub the night before praying they'll be dry the next morning when you hang them outside on the porch of your apartment building.

My precious scholars would be able to benefit from new uniforms a great deal this upcoming school year. Our school became a uniform school a few years ago, because we thought it would be easier and cheaper for the parents. Unfortunately, purchasing uniforms is the last thing on many of our parents' minds when they numerous children to buy uniforms for. These uniforms would mean so much to so many children because when they come to school with unclean uniforms, they will be able to change into clean ones and feel wonderful about themselves.

How they look each day affects their learning. Many times they are made fun of or will act out just to get sent home because they feel so uncomfortable in their unclean uniforms. I know having a spare set of uniforms in our classroom will impact our student's learning and attention on learning a great deal.
