Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a First Grade Dual Language classroom at Rachel Carson School in Chicago. I have taught for five years and get inspired every year with what the children achieve while facing many hardships. My students and their parents do not use their poverty as an excuse for not being successful. I am very proud of my students and their parents. A literature-rich classroom library and an inviting atmosphere are essential for the success of my students. School is a second home for my students and I would like to create a classroom library with books and a carpet for the students to utilize while reading. Students feel a sense of pride when their classrooms look good. The students will be able to use the books and carpet at school but I will also set up a lending library where the children will have the opportunity to check the books out and share them with their families. I currently do not have a carpet in my classroom which means the students have to sit on the cold floor during morning meeting, teacher read aloud, and library time. A carpet would be a great asset in my classroom and will be used by the students all day long. A great thing about the classroom library and the carpet is that they will be used for a new group of students every year. Ultimately the students will be benefiting from the books and the carpet. Building lifelong learners and fluent readers is my ultimate goal. Thank you for your consideration.
