My Students

Our school is 65% free and reduced lunch, most of my students are English language learners, and live in an urban community. Our intellectually disabled moderate class is comprised of 16 students with eligibilities such as Autism, Other Health impairments, and Intellectual Disabilities. My students come to school each day with the love for learning and are always happy, kind, and want to be the best versions of themselves.

The alternative curriculum which is based on the premise that every student no matter how severe his or her disability is capable of living working and recreating in the community as a successful citizen.

We focus on engaging students in constructive and personal leisure activities in school, home, and the community. We focus on increasing the likelihood of our students functioning as contributing adults within our society and increase opportunities of obtaining employment. We need to prepare our students to become as independent as possible in his or her living environment. Subject areas include community awareness, social awareness, money handling and time management, practical writing skills, and social skills.

My Project

Currently, my students are reading articles from scholastic journals. By incorporating visual aides such as the World and U.S maps, students will be able to locate where the current events are taking place. My students have learned to use a dictionary efficiently, such as where to locate the part of speech, definition and sentence. Now, I would like to incorporate the use of a thesaurus. I would like my students to expand their vocabulary, which will not only improve their writing but increase their standard scores when assessed for their Individual Education Plan.

These essential school supplies will enable our students from lower income families to access the curriculum.

For example, the spiral notebooks will help students keep track of their daily assignments and aide in the completion of daily activities. We do many activities such as quick pick math for geometry, place value and numerical operations, which require students to write in a notebook. Students are given reading comprehension activities, and they write the questions and answers in their notebook. Students also utilize the resources from the website NEWS 2 You, which instructs them to use crayons, and colored pencils. My students tend to use a high volume of erasers and pencils because they write hard which breaks the lead and erase due to mistakes they make. There is always a high need for erasers and pencil sharpeners.

The Chairback Buddy Pocket Chart will improve a student's work space. My students need daily reminders to organize their desk. I have tried pencil boxes for their materials but trash and other items seem to appear in these boxes. I feel the Chairback Pocket Chart will enhance their organizational skills.
