Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Kindergarten in a high-poverty, inner-city school. We have a high population of English Language Learners, and a vast majority of students who are on free and reduced lunch. We are a Title 1 school.

A lot of schools depend on the students to bring in supplies. Our school expects the same. Given our demographics, our families can't afford the same things that other families can. Many teachers, including myself, spend a lot of dollars on supplies to make learning more enjoyable. When supplies are used up so often, the money becomes a burden, and the kids begin to lose interest.

My students need an array of basic, colorful school supplies, including writing and journal paper, glue, crayons, markers, etc.The simplest things help make school more fun. It's amazing how a colored piece of paper or a colored marker changes the motivation within class. I allow students to use any supplies they like, and encourage colorful notes and worksheets to be turned in. Students take better notes when colored paper, colored pens/markers, and fun ways to take notes are used.

Give these kids what they need to achieve everything they've ever wanted! You can inspire them to be whatever they want to be in this dynamic world.
