My Students

Where do I begin? The students I have the pleasure and honor of teaching are smart, kind, energetic, motivated, and loving. They have the drive to reach their highest learning potential. These hardworking children in the 5th grade and are such deeply curious learners. They live in a very low-socioeconomic community in Harlem, New York and receive free or reduced-price breakfast, lunch, and after-school snacks.

My students are in an inclusive classroom and all have unique learning needs as they all have diagnosed disabilities, or as I like to call it "developmental variations." Many of them have parents that are doing their very best to survive but need support to ensure their children are not being neglected at home.

My students have many burdens they are exposed to and it is essential that they feel safe, loved, included, and inspired at school, and that is why I need your help!

My Project

Items as simple as post-it notes and pencils will allow my students to feel adequate as learners. The paper towels, sanitizer, and wipes will help keep our classroom clean. The labels help students find and organize items in the classroom. The, copy paper and ink, index cards, poly binder pockets, scotch tape, correction tape, packaging tape, double sided tape, pens and markers, and individual miniature white boards are all materials that are necessary for me to make engaging activities and to decorate the classroom with student work. The hall passes will help to ease transitions. The folders and notebooks allow my students to work on executive functioning skills and maintain organization in all subject areas!

Since I am the special education teacher in my classroom, these supplies will support each student in an individualized way while fostering a cohesive classroom community among typically developing students as well.

The mailboxes will allow my students to have a place to keep their homework and handouts organized while allowing me to communicate with their families at home. Many of my students' families are unable to provide school supplies for their students and do not have the most aesthetically pleasing living environment. Thus, it is essential that the room is pleasing in a sensory way (the contact paper, bulletin board letters and bulletin board borders) while including various supplies that are understandably not priorities for my students' caregivers. My goal is that my students are accessing everything they need, regardless of their disabilities, so that they are meeting their highest academic, social, and emotional potential in our classroom and school community.
