My Project
Research shows that after third grade, students needs to acquire around three thousand new vocabulary words a year to stay on grade-level in their reading. Strong vocabulary study is the foundation for proficiency in reading and writing. Our new English Learners need to learn literally thousands of new words to catch up to their grade level in school, and they need the right tools to organize and study.
This project is to provide the school supplies our students need to study.
By contributing to this project, you can help start students off on the right track as they collect and study words in their new language. Each student will receive a vocabulary binder, divided into subjects by tab, with a pencil case equipped with pencils, pens and highlighters to annotate text. Each student will also receive a set of spiral bound notecards to learn to make vocabulary study flashcards.
The majority of our newcomer students are asylum seekers, and they face much uncertainty outside of school. Our ENL team is working to provide these students with the basic supplies and tools that they need to engage successfully at school.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
