Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember your first day of school? How exciting it was to have brand new supplies to start the year off right! A typical day in my classroom consists of jotting ideas on post its, using book buddy bags to safely transfer books to and from school & creating projects based on books.

Hello, I teach literature and art to all of the third graders at my amazing school!

My love for books and reading is evident in each corner of my room! A typical day in my classroom consists of discussion about social issues, character traits, genres and plenty of book clubs. Our students are caring, kind, full of energy and ready to learn! At our public elementary school in the Bronx, my third grade students have diverse interests and different learning styles. Every one of our students wants to improve in reading and writing. They love engaging in book clubs and having book talks. They are improving their accountable talk skills and are open to reading different genres. They are eager to learn more about which book each club is reading.

My Project

My students borrow books each week from our classroom and take them home to read each night along with their reading logs as a way to close the gap of academic reading loss daily. We use a Ziploc or Hefty plastic bag to store and transport the books. Unfortunately, the bags are not sturdy enough, and often tear and damage the books. We need sturdier book baggies that will help keep the books intact and safely transport the books to and from home. Having sturdier bags will help. eliminate waste and provide students the ability to borrow more books because these baggies will hold more books. We also do lots of book club units and students need post it notes to jot down ideas, questions and words they have trouble with. We will use the construction paper to create art projects based on our book club books. I create mini charts for my students to have as a reference and the sheet protectors will keep those safe!

These supplies will improve my classroom because it will help with organization.

Students will have access to materials that will enable our units of study to run smoothly because we are equipped with the supplies that we need to succeed. My students will all have the opportunity to have their own book buddy bag to proudly transport books to and from home, post its to jot down thoughts in class and for homework while reading, sheet protectors to place mini charts that they can use daily.
