Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from homes that struggle with poverty on a variety of different levels. Some of my students deal with extreme poverty, while others are scraping to get by with the bare essentials. Our school is acutely aware of the challenges our students face when they leave us each day, so we offer a lot of programs (food service, as well as social and emotional) to ensure we're helping them in every way possible. But when they go home at night, so much is out of our control. They're babysitting siblings while parents are at work, cooking and cleaning apartments that house multiple families, some of them are working themselves into the wee hours of the night - there is little time for homework and academic enrichment.

They need so many things, and go without so much because of their socio - economic status.

This has an adverse impact on their educational performance at school, which in turn impacts their ability to break this cycle and make a better life for themselves.

My Project

Wee need cheer shorts and cheerleading shoes. These uniforms will allow us to compete in district, regional, and state competitions, and give these girls a reason to stay at school. If they don't have these uniforms, they cannot compete in any competition at all. Without a cheer team, my students will leave school each day and head into a neighborhood that is unsafe for teenage girls.

Our school needs Cheer uniforms so our girls can have a meaningful after school activity.

Cheer provides guidance for them, and gives them something meaningful and structured to do after school hours. Unfortunately, our school doesn't have the budget to fund a sport like this.
