My Project

I’m a social studies teacher at a school that focuses on kids with trauma. Throughout our lessons and in the times that I see students during homeroom, dismissal, and fun lunches, I try to teach them social/emotional and life skills. We were given a Cricut machine and we would like some other supplies in order to make some spirit gear. My students and I could use the items that we create to make a little school store. Students would use the vinyl with our Cricut machine to design school logos, mascot pictures, and imaginative artwork. The students would then use the heat press to affix their artwork permanently to hats, shirts, and other textiles. We could then put the items in a classroom store, where students could use their red tickets (coupons students and staff earn for good deeds) to “buy” school spirit gear. It is my hope that students will be able to use this opportunity to learn about things like writing a check, making change, creating a budget, and so on. Although those documents would pretend, they would be teaching very real-life skills that my students don’t currently have. In addition, as my students have trauma they are always looking for outlets for expression. The design programs for the cricket would allow my students to create logos, decorate new school images, and express themselves in a fun artistic way.
