My Students

The best teachers know that they need to employ numerous strategies to reach their students; the best school social workers are much the same — we draw on a wide range of skills and knowledge to serve students in a myriad of ways. School social workers are trained mental health professionals who provide critically important services directly to students and families.

This year, I have been tasked to support our students and families that are experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness.

Our school is located in the neighborhood of Fort Greene, the heart of Brooklyn in New York City. Our school community is vibrant, full of visionaries, and rich with history and deep communal roots.

My Project

School social workers serve a critical role in our educational system tackling the social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs of students that are proven barriers to student learning. Our services improve academic and behavioral outcomes, promote a positive school climate, and provide effective and vital student support services by maximizing school-based and community resources.

With the items chosen, this will support my work in play therapy, where children can act out pretend or real-life scenarios and are guided towards resolution while helping teach them how to let go of negative thoughts or feelings.

Through toys and games, children create personality traits, dilemmas, solutions and dialogue. They’re free to explore thousands of scenarios and come to just as many resolutions.
