Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a community where feelings and neurodiversity are slightly taboo, I want to create a safe space for students to feel themselves and free to express their wants and needs without feeling like a burden. I want my class to feel like home to them, even when their actual home doesn’t feel safe for them. I want students to walk into my class knowing that it’s their space and I’m just there to support and guide them.

My students are resilient.

Most come from non-English speaking homes that are far below the poverty line. Many share their small apartments with other families in order to make ends meet. Often times, school is their sanctuary and a lace where the difficulties from home go to the back of their minds, if only for a short time. However, often times these difficulties follow them to school and my classroom is a safe space for them to express themselves, or not, if they’re not ready.
