Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!

My students are excited to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am working to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, especially during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science, and social studies.

My Project

Our school is a “School of the Arts." We learn academics and social-emotional skills through various modalities of art, dance, drama and music. In order to provide these opportunities to my students, I need art materials readily available to my kids. Having a variety of materials to explore the arts will enhance my students’ experiences and will help me to teach my students.

My students will use oil pastels, watercolor paints, brushes and watercolor paper to express themselves and what they are learning through art.

Using Sharpie markers and paintbrushes will help my students with their fine motor skills. My kids will be learning through directed draw and creative expression. They will be sharing their emotions through color and shapes. They will be exploring with different modalities of art while learning academic skills, as well as social and emotional skills. A cabinet to store these valuable resources will allow me to care for all of these materials and keep them readily available to my students.
