School Leopards (the Reptile Variety)!

My students need a live animal to study the theory of evolution and unique adaptations that help animals survive in the wild. A pair geckos with their imitated habitat will help students make real learning connections.

My Students

I teach at an urban Title I school in North Miami where 99 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. The students have limited exposure to most of the concepts that are taught due to lack of financial resources for field experiences.I hope to help bring that experience into the classroom by having live animals that students can see and make connections to the lessons being taught and motivate them to learn and explore on their own about nature and the environment.

My Project

Linda Lentin's mascot is the LEOPARD. By adding a couple of live "leopard" geckos to the classroom I hope to inspire students to discover what is beyond the books and lectures by providing tangible proof of the concepts they will learn this year such as evolution, adaptations, habitats, food chains and webs, genetics and other life science topics. These class pets will provide a plethora of unique expansions into these lessons. Having access to animals like these is a financial limitation for most of my students and having them in class will provide hundreds of hours of exploration and learning.
