This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 crisis in the world. New York is an epicenter of the disease, but not everyone has been affected equally. Those with means have left the city for second homes or the homes of relatives in less affected parts of the country. My students are trapped in their apartments, many have not been outside in months. They are suffering isolation, lack of exercise, lack of fresh air, lack of security, and many continue to endure the trauma of loss. These are families that have lost work or continue to go to work because the complete loss of income is unsustainable. Many have had the loss of loved ones who have died from the virus.

All of this trauma is more than anyone should bear.

On top of it all though, they have lost the one place that provided stability, escape, and a place to learn about the world and themselves. They have lost going to school everyday. I feel powerless as well, but I know that by continuing to teach I can help them get through this, even if just in a small way.

My Project

I need an up-to-date computer that can handle the load of the many windows with tasks I need to accomplish, process videos and allow me to download, edit, and distribute student work. Most of my students have access to a district-provided computer at this point, but it doesn't matter much if mine is too old and broken down to withstand the heavy load of remote learning lesson preparation.

No distance learning plan can replace what we have lost with school closures.

With distance learning the only means for me to continue teaching my students, I am committed doing what I can to keep them connected to one another and to their learning. I am doing my best to record videos of lessons and demonstrations, but the nearly 10 year-old laptop I am using is not often up to the task. Processing times are long, video is choppy, and I do not have nearly enough processing speed or space make instructional videos or give feedback that provide students with a semblance of the same thing they would get in class.

Please help me continue teaching my students with a new laptop that can handle the demands of this overwhelming time.
