Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are approximately 28 creative and hardworking first grade students in our classroom. We are the only first grade class in a high needs, low-income school on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Despite so many hardships outside of our four walls, my students are eager to come to school to learn and do their best. Our classroom is the type of place where they feel not only safe, but brave and take risks and ask questions while leading their own learning.

My students each learn in their own way, and that often means dipping into your own pockets to support them as their teacher to make sure everyone succeeds.

Many of my students come from families that struggle to provide their children with supplies for school. I aim to inspire our earliest learners on a path of academic excellence by immersing them in a supportive, engaging and thought-provoking environment.

My Project

Many of my students experience trauma in their lives and providing them with positive literature and mindfulness techniques will help them work towards becoming resilient and emotionally intelligent. At the beginning of first grade, not all students are able to read. But they all are engaged by the artwork and the class conversations that take place around reading.

My classroom is filled with thoughtful students who are also learning the ins and outs of their own emotions and social interactions; who better to learn from than book characters?

Each book can be used over a week-long period to discuss various literary ideas, recall skills, character traits and lessons learned. It is important to have books that contain specific themes, lessons and life skills that students can then use in their every day lives and interactions with others.

Not all students are read to at home, so this gives them the opportunity to develop listening and comprehension skills, while also motivating them to read.
