This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The first floor of our school was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. We lost everything from desks and chairs to dry-erase markers and compasses. We are trying to rebuild a school that took us years to create.

Our school was established in 2005 bringing together students from different backgrounds.

Many students come from Far Rockaway and Breezy Point- two completely different neighborhoods. Together we have created a cohesive learning environment that allows all students to succeed. After 8 years of building a school from the ground up, we were severely knocked down by Hurricane Sandy. The first floor of our school was completely destroyed. For almost 3 months we were placed in a different location until our building could be restored. Students lost their homes, cars, and personal belongings. Many had to relocate and live with family outside our community. Although it has been, and continues to be a struggle to rebuild, we have maintained over 90 % attendance every day. Our students are dedicated to learning. They are extremely hard-working, strong, resilient, and caring young boys and girls. They have shown others what it means to be at our school.

My Project

In many schools, the photocopier is a cherished member of the school community. When the Atlantic Ocean entered our school, the flood waters destroyed our stock room full of paper as well as a few of our copy machines. Toner for photocopiers is expensive and the ongoing cost of paper tends to go up. Many of our students already access instructional content through through the web. We're looking to save a few trees (not to mention dollars that could be better spent rebuilding our school), scan our materials and put them online for our students to access regardless of their location.

A scanner would also make it easier to share materials amongst teachers and archive student work.

Many of our student portfolios were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. If we were able to maintain a digital archive of student work, those projects would not be gone now.
