My Students

My students come from an area where our schools are historically underfunded and lack the appropriate materials and programing to provide optimal learning experiences. Many of our students deal with high levels of precarity in the forms of poverty, traumatic experiences, violence, gun violence, and a variety of other issues. Despite these horrible circumstances, our students show up daily ready to learn and hoping for new experiences that challenge them to grow. Please, join and assist us in improving their overall education by improving their school experience.

My Project

This project will allow our school to provide a robust curriculum that provides collaborative experiences between the community, students, and teachers. By funding this project you will help us provide learning experiences that will focus on how food comes from the farm to our tables, practices of sustainability, health and nutrition lessons, connecting with nature, and connecting the core content areas of health, math & science to real-world experiences.

Within a resource deprived school district, the school garden will allow us to create a multitude of opportunities that will create a greater sense of community while building a lifelong relationship with food and nature.

Students have engaged in a ballot initiative that required students to utilize their voices to advocate for what our garden will be, items we should grow, and other ways we can use the garden within our school community. Students have demanded for a food garden that can be used to create snacks during health classes, create food baskets for community members and people in need, a garden club to help them practice their schools outside of school hours, and develop opportunities for entrepreneurship.

In addition to the demands of students, the school garden will provide opportunities to connect with the other schools in the neighborhood who have school gardens. We are a K-8 school and have other neighborhood schools that have grades K-5. As a K-8 we have students transfer to our school once they complete 5th grade to partake in the middle school programs. Having a chance for students to network with other students from different schools will create a more community oriented transition for students coming from other schools when they enter 6th grade. Our community is excited to grow the garden but we need basic equipment and tools to begin the journey.
