Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can teenagers be expected to make good food choices if they do not understand the basic Science behind nutrition, food production and food safety?

My students are considered "at risk" and they receive their second and sometimes third chance to succeed at our alternative, public school.

Students are able to become more independent and responsible by choosing their courses and internships and participating in decisions that affect their lives.

My Project

We do expect the young adults at our school to be responsible and critical thinkers. Unfortunately, they do not have much training and exposure to Food Science. This most basic element of their lives goes unexamined and causes health, economic and environmental issues that severely impact their lives. With these hands-on materials such as an agricultural resources kit, food calorimeter, yeast observation kit, nutritional analysis kit and food poisoning pictograph students will be able to evaluate their food choices by considering the nutritional information, environmental impact and safety of the food they eat.

Our students are struggling with health issues, particularly obesity and diabetes.

They are overwhelmed with messages about their food, but they have little information to sort through the myths and the facts. This Science class and your donation will help them investigate aspects of the food they eat. They will be empowered to question health and safety information and will have the background knowledge to make smarter decisions about the food they consume.
