My Students

My first grade students love science and social studies time! This is their favorite time of the day. Having a class subscription to Scholastic News would help maintain the students excitement for these subjects but also help me incorporate nonfiction text reading practice into this time.

My students come from lower socioeconomic homes.

Half of my students are English language learners. Despite the obstacles they must overcome, they are still eager to learn and try hard! Their parents are very supportive and thankful for all the love and help their child receives at school. However, most of the parents don't have the knowledge or resources to help their child at home become better readers.

My Project

I will use Scholastic News in my classroom to teach my students my science and social studies curriculum. It will also be a learning tool to gain practice in reading nonfiction texts and building reading comprehension. Science and social studies textbooks are usually written above a first grade reading level. Therefore, students are unable to read them independently. The teacher has to read the text and the students don't get the opportunity to be actively engaged. By using Scholastic News, my students will be able to read the stories with me, in a small group or with a partner. They will have their own copy so they can be actively engaged in the reading process. Active engagement will help them remain excited about the topic as well as increase their reading skills. Students will also be able to take their own copy home with them to continue practicing with their families. Parents will be able to share the reading experience with their child using the magazine weekly.

My first graders love anything relating to science or social studies topics.

Scholastic News will help create excitement in the classroom while giving the students the opportunity to read nonfiction texts on their reading level. It will also give them something to take home to read with their families.
