My Students

I work in a Title 1 NYCDOE school in Flushing, NY. Most of the kids in my class come from low income families. We are currently following a blended learning model during the pandemic with some going full remote. They come from families that cannot afford to keep their children at home, needing to work in order to provide child care for the days when they are not in the building.

Our school year has just started, but I know all the children from teaching science to them last year in kindergarten.

Most of them are ELLs, partnered up with others who speak their native language. It is amazing to see the communication from one to another at such a young age. They are a community of curious learners and love to take part in discussion and sharing. It is so cute to see their eyes light up when introduced to a new topic or concept, their eagerness to learn being evident. You would be surprised to see how much they already know and are able to absorb at such a young age.

My Project

These Scholastic News magazines will help supplement the curriculum being taught. Topics are timely are provide for enrichment in a fun and interesting way. The digital component includes fun games based on the content taught. This will especially useful in teaching non-fiction.

Students will bring the materials home and be able to share with their families and provide reading that can be used as a springboard for discussion and quality time with new resources instead of the routine books brought from home.

And they will be able to keep them as their own!
