My Students

My students are a wonderful group of learners who come from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. While my students come from hard-working families, some of them are lacking the necessities to be successful in today's world. Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, but all of them love to learn. My students are creative, independent thinkers who are maturing and gaining a much-needed strong foundation for middle school. My goal is for each student to improve as much as possible and build the most solid foundation possible for their future education.

My Project

Each year my students have benefited from a subscription to the Scholastic News Magazine. This is a wonderful resource that is an age appropriate news magazine for 4th graders. The students read and learn about current events and topics that are of interest to them. Next school year (2021-2022) our school won't be able to purchase these as usual for our students and I'd love to still be able to provide them for my fourth graders. My students have been able to enjoy Scholastic News this school year because of the generosity of DonorsChoose donors. I enjoy using this magazine as a great close reading resource to teach children to read carefully and think critically about what they read. This versatile resource allows me to work with students as a whole class, in a small group setting and students can use them independently. During the pandemic, we have been using this resource virtually and it has been wonderful. Perhaps the most fun feature for the kids is the student debate topic given each week. As a class we enjoy giving our opinions on the various debate topics in the magazine and this comes in handy when teaching opinion writing to my students.
