My Students

My school is located in Woodside, New York, within the borough of Queens, which is known as one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the world, according to Guinness World Records. Approximately 85% of our students speak a language other than English at home, including over 30 different languages. About 30% of our students are English Language Learners.

Our students are eager to learn, and work daily to improve reading fluency, comprehension, proficiency, and stamina while building knowledge and skills in a variety of ways.

Having access to engaging, grade-level texts is a great way to encourage a love of reading that will help our students to become college and career ready, as well as lifelong learners.

My Project

This year, my school is working on a blended learning model, with much of our classwork being conducted remotely online. I will be working with two classes and I am asking for digital subscriptions to Scholastic News to keep all of my students engaged in reading this upcoming school year.

For most of my 20-year teaching career, I’ve used Scholastic News in my classroom as a way to keep students up-to-date on current events with high interest, grade-level articles and text features.

A subscription to Scholastic News includes various online features, including audio, videos, and activities that capture my students’ attention and help make them active participants in their own learning. Struggling readers can confidently participate alongside their more proficient peers, as the articles are highly engaging and help increase student vocabulary and understanding while being “kid-friendly”.

Scholastic News will not only serve as a great supplement to our literacy program, but it covers current events, science, and social studies topics, as well as nonfiction text features, such as photos, infographics, charts, and maps, as well as the ever-popular “Debate of the Week” feature that helps our students think about, discuss, and write their opinions, backing them up with proof and text evidence, an important writing goal in our school.
