Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic about learning and they will love receiving their very own Scholastic News throughout the year. It will undoubtedly become something they look forward to with great anticipation.

My school serves a diverse student population with over fifty percent of them being English Language Learners.

They are part of an amazing school community that truly cares for each and every child's well-being and success. My students are so excited when we have new books or materials in our classroom, so I can only imagine what it will be like for them to have their very own Scholastic News subscription. This magazine will allow them access to engaging, grade-level reading material that will help keep them informed about current events and issues that pertain to their lives.

My Project

When the Scholastic News magazines arrive, one of the students will either deliver them to the students' mailboxes or tables. Often, we will use an article for a whole-class read aloud, especially during a nonfiction unit of study. During independent or partner reading, students will have the opportunity to dig into the magazines on their own. They will read and reread articles, and we will reference them throughout the year.

Most of my students receive free or reduced school lunch, and we, as teachers, know that their families are working hard just to make ends meet.

We work hard in the classroom to help meet as many of their needs as possible. As teachers, we do not receive enough money for classroom resources to purchase Scholastic News subscriptions for all of our students. Bringing this amazing resource to my classroom will only be possible if this project is funded.
