Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every afternoon, after reading and math, we enjoy reading about and discussing something to do with science. Right now we are enjoying dinosaurs by researching them the best that we can. I hope by getting Scholastic News and Science Spin weekly, we will have science topics for the year.

I have a very eager-to-learn group of first graders.

One thing that I have found is that they love Science. For this reason, I must be able to provide a variety of topics for them to study and research. Our school consist of children from low income families. Parents provide what they can, but are unable to provide extra things, like a magazine subscription. I would like my students to receive Scholastic News and Science Spin as a resource for them to see how wonderful Science is and how important it is in their lives.

My Project

My students will be able to receive a Scholastic News magazine every week. Each magazine provides science and social studies topics. We can practice our reading skills and discuss the articles. Some of the topic have never been experiencde by these children and it is so exciting seeing and hearing them realize something for the first time. Scholastic News provides a Common Core Tools kit that provides lesson plans, skill sheets, and text that increases as the school year progresses. There are also learning games that are provided with the weekly topics. Science Spin will be included in Scholastic News to provide science current events. I am very excited at the idea that my students can go home and tell their families about all they have learned.

I hope that my class will be able to receive a subscription to Scholastic News.

I am looking forward to all the discussions and excitement when reading about new things. This may be the only opportunity for many of these children to be exposed to many of the science and social studies topics. A magazine subscription may seem like a small thing to many people, but to many of these children, it is the greatest and they look forward to reading it each week.
