My Students

My students are primarily at-risk, low-income, struggling readers. My school is a dropout prevention alternative school. Our students typically struggle with reading comprehension and motivation, so we work in small class settings to help give each student what they need.

My students come to our school because a traditional school hasn’t worked for them for one reason or another, and we have been working to implement a more student-centered, individualized learning experience for each student that enters our school.

My Project

I am requesting a new year's subscription to the magazine Scholastic Action. It has been such a great addition to my curriculum because it includes relevant, engaging articles at an accessible reading level for my students. Many of my students are intimidated by reading a book or short story, but the articles in Scholastic are more approachable. Each subscription includes 8 different magazine issues with lots of different articles and activities as well as access to their online activities. I would love to be able to have several different issues of the magazine to offer throughout the year for my students.
