My Students

The students at my school are low-income and come from economically disadvantaged communities across New York City. Ninety-five percent of them are African-American or Latino. This year I am teaching four 9th grade sections where two sections are ICT classes.

While most of my students are very capable, they have a history of low achievement in mathematics.

Most of them come to me with skills way below grade level. In addition, they do not know how to express themselves effectively and they have difficulty working together as a team. Nevertheless, they can get excited about learning.

Technology is a tool I planned to use more extensively this year to engage my students. However, many of my students do not have cell phones and have limited access to computers, tablets and the internet outside of school. So, here I am asking for you for some supplies to help my students to learn those 21st Century Skills...collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity.

My Project

Lessons and activities will be differentiated. While some students are engaged in work involving the use of headphones, other students will be presenting their thinking to others or critiquing the thinking of others.

With these supplies, my students can become collaborators, communicators, and critical and creative thinkers.

The headphones will allow my students to take assessments over the internet and watch instructional videos in class individually for remediation or acceleration. Other students can work collaboratively on an assignment or project though google classroom. Students who are absent can have access to online material that will allow them to catch up while other students continue with their learning.

Presenting to a small group or the whole class are important activities to help my students to develop their communication and presentation skills. With the chart paper, students will be working in groups to explore mathematical concepts and represent their thinking. They will then be asked to present their thinking to others. Students will also participate in gallery walks. In this activity, students post their work around the classroom for other students to critique and comment on.

As for the automatic pencil sharpeners, my student constantly need their pencils sharpened to do their work. This is a math class!!!
