Many of the first graders who I teach come from low-income families in the heart of the city. Some of them are behind their peers in academics. Some of them have limited access to resources at home and at school that will help them be successful.
It is important to have access to tools that can help my students catch up and keep up with their grade-level peers.
My students are some of the youngest learners who are very excited about learning! I have 25 first graders. Many of them were with me in kindergarten. We are going to first grade together! They love learning new things and using new tools as this motivates them. My school focuses on building communities of learners who are engaged in their learning and I support this mission by exposing my students to resources and experiences.
My students come from various backgrounds and some have limited access to high-quality informational texts. In fact, we have limited access to content area texts at our school. Having Scholastic magazines will help these young beginning readers take a deep dive and learn how to read closely for information. These magazines fall right in line with the push towards the reading of more informational texts. My students love learning about new things and will be motivated and engaged in the lessons using the Scholastic magazines. We have table and small group discussions and my students will enjoy sharing new information with their peers. They will love to interact with the projected issues and they will love reading their copy. They love to share what they are learning with their families and I'm sure they will share their magazines at home and engage their families in topic discussions! These magazines will help support home/school relationships!
