Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What happens when you take 18 of our most opinionated and outspoken young ladies into the forest for six days for team building, reflection, and empowerment? The possibilities are endless.

A great deal of educational policy has been focused on improving educational systems for young men of color.

And while we are not disputing the need for improved educational policies for boys, we are saying that young ladies of color need help, too. Young ladies, similar to young men, face similar issues of poverty, racism, and identity. Young ladies, however, are oftentimes given extra household responsibilities in single-parent homes and face additional gender prejudices. My program is designed with that idea in mind- that there is nothing wrong with the girls who are failing, but rather, that our educational system is failing to provide all of the support they need in order to thrive. Our program targets 16 young women from 9th - 12th grade.

My Project

These girls need uniform-friendly scarves to highlight their sisterhood and their status as young leaders at school. During the 6 days at Girls' Camp, the girls engaged in various leadership workshops, resilience trainings, and team-building activities. At the end of the camp, they participated in a "Step-Up Ceremony" where they promised to graduate on time from high school and promised to help one another through times of success and times of difficulty. Not only will these new scarves distinguish them from the rest of the school community, but they will be a visible reminder of the promises they made to one another during the summer. We will use the scarves as an opportunity to reaffirm their summer promises and remind them how far they have come as young ladies. They have worked very hard to break old habits and change the usual narratives of young women of color.

Your donations can significantly change the single stories that we tell about young women of color in the Bronx.

We fiercely believe that our girls have the potential to be great leaders for both our school community and beyond. By continuing to celebrate their sisterhood and linking them together as one, they will be able to better support one another during the many inevitable difficult obstacles that they will face as young women growing up. Our young ladies are just waiting to step up!
